Ten Latvian beaches and two marinas have been awarded the Blue Flag eco-label this year. The Blue Flag has become the most popular eco-label, recognized by local residents, tourists, as well as representatives of local governments and environmental institutions.

The Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) has decided that the Blue Flag will be hoisted in Vakarbulli beach in Riga, at Ventspils beach, Majori and Jaunkemeri beaches in Jurmala, Lielais Stropu Lake beach and "Stropu vilnis" beach in Daugavpils, camping site "Abragciems" beach in Engure Region, Stadium beach in Liepaja, “Martinsala” beach in Kuldiga, and Radzu beach in Jekabpils.

On the other hand, Liepaja Yacht Center and “Pavilosta Marina” are the only Latvian marinas to be awarded the Blue Flag this year.

“The Blue Flag is closely connected with tourism. During their vacation, people tend to choose those cities where beaches are awarded the Blue Flag. It is a reliable indicator that the beaches’ quality matches international standards, they are supervised by rescue services, and that children can safely play near the water,” emphasizes FEE national coordinator Janis Ulme.

The Blue Flag works towards sustainable development at beaches/marinas through strict criteria dealing with water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, safety and other services.
